Lee Jasper (who founded along with others the National Black Caucus, 1990 Trust, Operation Black Vote, Anti Racist Alliance, National Assembly Against Racism, Unite against Fascism Jubilee 2000 as well as establishing a huge number of local initiatives) has hit the headlines a number of times with calls for Black schools, and has called upon the Black community to take advantage of existing Government schemes to provide schools catering for the specific needs of Afro Caribbean and African children.
In circa 1890 an early African academy was established in Clapham to deal with the great number of young black people left homeless and jobless following the abolition of slvery. Thus, the concept of ‘black focused schools,’ s (schools which focus on the afrocentric education of black british children, was birthed). Modernly, our central responsibility, remains to create, not await, conditions in which positive role models can freely emerge.
